Video Transcript

Germany's foreign minister Yan Vardafool has posted a clip on social media featuring a penguin promoting the European Union's core values. >> He would immediately head right back for the mountains. But why? >> We do prefer respect to bullies. >> The clip stresses some key EU principles including loyalty, competition, and freedom. But the video also appears to have the US in its sights criticizing bullying against a backdrop that looks like Greenland >> defense of freedom for sure. For >> more on this, I'm now joined by our political correspondent Julia Sao daily. Uh Julia, we've become accustomed to the White House posting videos like this on its social channels. Uh but how surprising is it to see this sort of stuff on the Tik Tok channel of Germany's foreign minister? Well, this seems to be an official video uh partly AI generated produced by the uh probably the press team behind the foreign minister at the foreign ministry here in Germany. It was posted to the foreign minister's official accounts and uh if uh anyone has been following what the account has been posting lately, it is quite clear that this video isn't particularly outstanding because we've seen seen a bit of a shift in the kind of uh communication that is coming from the foreign ministry on these official accounts. We see uh more trends being used that are seen widely on social platforms. We see a language and a style that is uh stronger and with stronger statements. And this is something that has evidently become clear to politicians and people in the ministries that to reach a certain audience that is on these platforms, there needs to be a change in in language, a change in style. And we've uh clearly seen that happening on the account of the foreign ministry and at a time when geopolitical tensions and in particular some uh increased animosity with longtime partner the US is uh is is showing up. Uh this is something that we see reflected also on these accounts. >> Now the Greenland issue has pushed transatlantic relations to breaking point. Now this video appears to play on all those tensions between the US and Europe. uh talk us through some of the key points. >> Well, this video seems to be a bit of a mashup of actually a lot of memes and social media trends that we've seen in the last few weeks. Uh one big reference seems to be a photo posted by the account of uh the White House. It's also an AI generated photo where we see presumably Donald Trump holding hands with a penguin uh presumably in Greenland because we see a Greenland flag uh in the background and the penguin is holding a US flag. Now I'd like to point out that penguins uh are not in Greenland but in Antarctica. Um so the video from uh Vadula, the German foreign minister seems to reference this photo. There's also a reference to a viral video by German director Vena Hatsog, a documentary of his in which he films a penguin in Antarctica uh not following his colony and going on a lone uh and courageous path in the distance of Antarctica and many social media users see that as a show of self-reliance and independence and this also seems to be the interpretation of the foreign ministry and we also see a recent statement featured in the video by German French President Emanuel Mron wearing sunglasses at Davos and defending Europe and its values. So quite a loaded video right there. >> It looks like the German foreign ministry has arrived in the 21st century. Thank you very much Julia Saleli.
